An Evening of Firsts
We had our first tumble last night. It was awful! It was full of cliches. "I only turned my back for a second." I guess they are cliche for a reason! I had her on the couch, turned around and bam! Screaming! Luckily she was only about a foot off the ground when it happened. In a few seconds she was calm and smiling, so I assumed she was fine but we still looked online to see if we should call the doctor. Thank god for the google! From what we found, a fall from 3 feet or less usually isn't much to worry about. It is falls from counters (why would you put your baby on the counter?) that are more worrisome. Especially since she was smiling and cooing, we felt like she was fine. Then a few minutes later Callie and I were in the rocking chair and Bill was on the couch when she suddenly laughed! It was the most adorable thing ever!

Vaccinations Round 2
We got Callie her second round of vaccinations yesterday. Phew! We did AOK during the actual appointment. There was an oral vaccine which she went after with gusto, especially since she was already hungry. She was probably a little confused as to why it wasn't milk! Then she got the shots in her legs. Luckily they combine some of the vaccines these days. She was screaming and I settled in to feed her and she calmed down almost immediately. We got her in the car and she passed out, hard. She slept for about an hour here and there. During the late afternoon it got ugly. I don't know if it was the pain in her legs or just feeling all the junk in her system but she went nuts. She was screaming louder and more shrill than I have EVER heard her, and that's saying something cuz we've heard some doozies in last two months. It was awful! And there was just no consoling her, probably because she didn't know what was happening to her. It lasted well into the night which was really bad timing. I had surmised that if she had a rough time with her vaccinations she would be through it by the early evening. This was important because it was our anniversary and Bill had planned to take me out to dinner. Leaving her screaming with my mom may have been the hardest thing I've had to do yet. If it had been ANYONE else but her I wouldn't have gone. As it was I almost told Bill to cancel our plans. I sat and cried in the car for a bit. But I realized there wasn't anything I could do to help her. While we were out she calmed down for a bit and then erupted like a vomiting volcano. So poor Grandma Tere got to experience the incredible vomiting girl! But apparently she felt better after that and calmed down. At least we don't have to do this again for another 2 months! And you can be sure the schedule will be totally open! Live and learn!

Some Kind of Separation Anxiety
Callie seems to have developed some kind of separation anxiety. I first noticed it last week when a friend came over to hold her and Callie just cried and cried until I took her. I thought it was a one time thing but it is becoming more common, even with her daddy. And now it is making driving in the car interesting. If someone is in the back seat with her she is fine, but when I am driving and she is by herself in the backseat (which is most of the time) she just screams bloody murder! So of course she gets herself all worked up and sweaty by the time we arrive where we are going. From what I have found online, they seem to just grow out of it, but most of the people I found online were experiencing this around month 5 or so. We have made conscious efforts the last few days to have Callie spend more time with her daddy so she will get over this a bit, because I certainly can't hold her 24 hours a day!

Getting Better With Her Fingers

First Blood
No, Callie is not starring in a baby version of Rambo. When I went to get her up this morning, or rather when she got me up, I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw her face. She had a gash on her nose from one of her jagged nails. She had scratched herself before, but it had just left behind some red marks no blood. So out came the nail file to take care of those nails. Poor thing.

Callie Finally Visits 3rd Period
We finally made it to school last week to visit my 3rd period. A bunch of them had been emailing me asking when we were going to come visit. The morning classes were hard to visit since Callie typically finally goes down around 1am. We were determined to make it on the last day of school, last thursday. We just barely made it! but it was so worth it. The kids were so excited to see us. One of the funniest things was a group of girls came up close to see her and miraculously Callie was awake! and not only that, she was being super cute and smiling. So of course this gaggle of girls were all with the oooh and the ahhs. I was trying to ask the girls questions and they all started answering unison and almost stepford like. I asked them if the rest of the year went ok with the sub and they all said "Uhhh Huhhhh." It was hilarious. Never underestimate the power of a cute baby on a group of girls apparently. And here I thought we would be a cautionary tale! One of my students had one of her friends with her and he took the cutest picture of Callie, that is above. It is probably my favorite picture of her so far. And since Callie was still awake we moved over to the main office to prove that I had a "real" baby. I had been accused of having a fake baby because she was always asleep when I brought her to school. And of course, by the time we got to the office she was asleep again. Oh well. She did wake up for a bit after our diaper change on the go in the principal's office.

Callie's Musical Tastes
So far we know that Callie likes Lady Gaga. Now we have another to add to the list. We were at a friend's graduation party last night complete with mariachis and Callie loved it! She had been a tad upset before the band took the stage and then was just as happy as could be. So apparently, Callie has very eclectic musical tastes already!

Diaper Changes On The Go!
This was something we haven't done too much of. Last night when we were out to dinner at The Sonoma Chicken Coop we gave it a whirl. I grabbed the girl and all of her accessories and headed towards the bathroom. There was no changing table but there was a nice wide counter to work with. I found yet another use for cloth diapers: pillows for hard changing table surfaces! So we had a successful change on the go. Today while I was at school, finally visiting my 3rd period, little miss Callie was wet wet wet or so I thought. But boy was I mistaken. I had been visiting with the principal and her secretary and told the secretary that I was going to change her in the bathroom down the hall, but she told me just to use the boss' office. So I did. Felt a little strange and overexposed but we did ok. But if only she had just been wet:) I will leave the details to your imagination, but we got cleaned up and did just fine. She was a happy camper after that and I was finally able to prove to the staff that I do indeed have a real baby. I had been accused of having a fake baby because she was always asleep when I brought her to visit.
Adventures in Projectile Liquids
So there we were yesterday almost out the door to go to my work's end of the year BBQ. So into the carseat Callie went. And all of a sudden, more liquid than I thought could have possibly fit into her little body came spewing out all over the car seat and her clothes, which were of course meticulously picked out the occasion. But she wasn't done. ohhh no! I put her on the changing table to get her cleaned up and our little girl spewed like a geyser. I jumped back to avoid as much of the milk, or what used to be milk came hurtling my way. Poor baby was so shocked and upset. I calmed her down and got her cleaned up again. I rocked and talked to her and took her temperature (no fever) and soon she fell asleep. So while she slept I got her clothes cleaned and ready to go for our 2nd attempt. When she woke up she seemed fine so we went down to the park for the bbq. She slept most of the time and we went back home. She had 3-4 feedings in between with no problems and then lo and behold one of her last feedings of the night it happened again. Luckily Bill was there to help me this time. I took her temperature again, still no fever. She of course was hungry very soon after so I tentatively fed her again and she was fine. We talked about whether or not to take her to the doctor the next day. I have an appt with my midwife so I'm going to ask her what she thinks today and am going to keep a close eye on her eating habits today and so far so good. So hopefully it was just that she ate too fast. I had been having trouble with my breastmilk supply after my bout with food poisoning so I had been back on the mother's milk tea and lactation supplements. So my hope is that she just couldn't keep up with the increased supply not that she is sick.

Stroller Hike at Rancho
I went on a StrollerHike outing solo today. It was lovely! It was a beautiful day and a nice paved trail at Rancho San Antonio Preserve. Because it was a smaller group this time, probably 8-10 moms I got a chance to meet some really nice people. It felt good to really connect with some moms. The moms I met at the moms group are nice, but no real connection. One woman even had playdate cards that she handed out to a couple of us. Not sure if I'm ready for playdate cards, given she can't even sit up yet, but maybe some cards with my email address might be in order. One of the funniest things was that everyone was totally floored that we were out of the house at 7 weeks!? I wonder how long they waited to venture outside? I would've gone super crazy without some outings! It was a great walk and it felt wonderful to be outside in the sunshine, especially since I had had a pretty rough morning. It was just what we needed.
Food Poisoning Adventure
So I made a very poor decision friday night and picked up some fast food on my way home from my night out with co-workers. Baaaaad news. Bill and I both got food poisoning. Neither of us had ever had food poisoning before so we were a little worried it was the flu at first. I got sick in the morning and felt like I had been hit by a truck. We checked symptoms to make sure it wasn't mastitis and whether or not I should still nurse Callie. Apparently the only time you shouldn't nurse is if you are hospitalized, in which case, I can't imagine you would feel much like nursing anyway! So I groggily woke up a few times to feed her and back to bed I went. I remembered thinking it was weird that Bill wasn't feeling sick, since his stomach is a lot more sensitive than mine. And lo and behold...Just when I felt better, down went Bill, hard. My body seemed to process it faster than Bill's for some reason. Unfortunately we had to miss a good friend's birthday party, for which we had already reserved Grandma Tere's services. So she came over as planned which was a total godsend, so I wasn't totally on my own when Bill went down for the count. So if we were both gonna get sick, this is the way to do it: in shifts! By Sunday morning Bill was feeling better and it was definitely nice to have everybody back to normal!

Cute Stuff!
Callie has been smiling up a storm and laughed for the first time this week. It is absolutely the most adorable thing in the world.
